Voix de la Ville is a new cabaret evening for new and established performance artists to showcase their work. Premiering on 28 June at The Castle, the show encapsulates a range of live acts, music and performance pieces. To explore the concept I shot some questions towards the mastermind and mistress behind Voix de la Ville, Ash Baroque.
What can show-goers expect from Voix de la Ville?
The night will be a variety type show with burlesque, drag, cabaret and some spoken word. There will also be installation.
A lot of discussion on the event’s promo page has been about the myths of drag performance. What is ‘real drag’ all about?
DRAG is short for “dressed as girl”. This is from the shakespearean times when women were not allowd to act on stage. Everybody always has an opinion. Voix de la Ville is a proposal of ideas, by individual artists, taking you on a journey through their exploration of performance.
It’s seems like 3 minute pop performances are being pumped out like a commercial product in Perth’s gay venues - how do you break away from this mould?
To escape this mould, a performer must simply use their intellect. A friend recently said to me that the youth should focus on entrenching themselves in history by refrencing the past. Leave the pop songs for the likes of our elders, as they will be touched by richness and experience. I say you can pull off anything as long as you have conviction.
From what I’ve seen over the last year Perth has experienced a jump in the number of burlesque, cabaret and performance nights. Why do you think Perth has suddenly taken an interest?
Perth as a collective has always been a creative hub. This is not a sudden interest. The world naturally moves in a cyclic motion and every turn breeds the desire for change and evolution. Coming into a tough time economically, it is vital to have vehicles of expression ready and available for our community to experience, indulge and release. People are becoming hungry for change and “Voix de la Ville” is serving organic steamed vegetables.
I noticed you a few prominent names in the Voix de la Ville ensemble, like Petro Vouris, who is frequently involved with RTR, Shape nightclub and SEXY. How did the team all come together for this event?
Lets not forget the line up of performers.”Glamour Puss” Perth’s drag darling for over a decade, living legend “Strykermeyer”, international theatrical chameleon “Ostin Torre” and “The Amazing Petros Rhythym Machina” is our sound genius, plus many more performances. Petro and myself first collabarated in 2004/05, if my memory serves me correctly, “The Prom” party at The Bakery. Scott Patrick Mitchell and myself hosting. Later I opened The PRESETS DJ set at Bar Open with a drag number before being carried off stage. Ohhh, the memories! Musically, The Amazing Petros Rhythm Machina brings the sound of a revolution, embodying “Voix de la Ville”. Essentially, a collaboration of creative friends.
If you wanted to give a taste of what the Voix de la Ville experience is like, what would you recommend people see / read / listen / do?
I recommend arriving at this event with an open heart and mind. “Voix de la Ville” is like a porthole to another dimension. Where Colour and Love reign supreme. I love this question Tim! Read: Quentin Crisp. See: John Waters films*. Listen: The Amazing Petros Rhythm Machina. Do: Check out the facebook group and make sure you get there.
Voix de la Ville will be held on 28 June at The Castle. $10 entry on the door, 18+
* Note from Tim: As I’m a huuuge John Waters fan, I’m going to sneak in this video of one of my favourite scenes from the John Waters film Female Trouble:

Good work Ash.
Hey - the date of this show is the 40th anniversary of Stonewall. Is that intended or just co-incidence?
