Glamfest 2009 Launch

Glamfest, Perth’s dedicated gay and lesbian film festival, is off and running at Astor Cinemas in Mount Lawley and continues over the coming weekend. Launch night (Wednesday) had a great turnout - I turned up 10 minutes late and all of the canapes had already disappeared, but hey, there was plenty of sparkling to go around.

My photo doesn’t do the welcoming function justice. Opening the festival was ‘Were the world mine‘, a cheesy mish-mash of high school musical meets Shakespeare meets homosexual intercourse. Parts of the movie are very loosely based around ‘A Midsummer Nights Dream’, where our gay teenage main character creates a potion to send anyone into idle-love with the first person they lay eyes on. Of course he uses it on the hot jock he has a boner for.

The cheese factor of this movie is more of a delightful quirk than a deterrent. There’s even a disney-esque Fairy Gaymother who acts as cupid to the ridiculously hot lovers. Unfortunately the ending is terribly predictable as the plot completely crumbles away into a 5 minute wrap-up. I would have expected a pack of homophobic sporty jocks who had been drugged into having sex with each other to be having a few more psychological issues than they did on screen. Either way the ending is definitely not a deal breaker - watch this movie.

Connections backroom spread open and exposed

On Thursday night the mystery of the Connections mens only backroom was revealed! I popped along to the event (for research purposes only) and snapped this photo of what was going on inside:

backroom

Just kidding. I don’t actually have any photos because there really wasn’t all that much happening in there. For the most part it was a revolving door of gays entering, exclaiming “ewwwww”, sometimes staying for a few nervous giggles then leaving. The light was so low all I could see were the edges of shoulders and jeans thrusting in unknown directions. Very few people. I didn’t see any condoms being handed out… hrm.

stripper

Now that we’re over the back room anticlimax some other points of the night. Great music but pills were being popped in every direction and it got a tad annoying having to scrape across gurners. There was a strip show (above) but you know, the stipper looked pretty damn bored, if not uncomfortable. I wonder if he gets so many female hands molesting him when he walks through a crowd at a hens night.

For the rest of the weekend I have been in an ethanol induced stupor, here’s me drunk off my ass doing a whirlwind media tour and showing the website to a lecture hall of thousands of ethnographic research academics. Not one of them was opposed to entering a back room, I swear.

Glamfest 2009

Dedicated gay and lesbian film festival, Glamfest, is quickly approaching with the launch night on Wednesday 15 April. Thirteen films will be shown at Astor Cinemas in Mount Lawley over a five day period. Content ranges from homo high school musical to dyke docos and all around gay dramas (the family and relationship kind, not the ‘Saturday night at the Court’ kind).

Most of the films are across the weekend of the 18th and 19th, so if you were a fan of Hoyts movie marathons back in your high school days, but didn’t think they were gay enough, this might just be your cup of tea.

Launch night tickets are $20, the rest are $12. Or, you can bulk buy 5 tickets for $50 here (excluding the launch). I’ll be at almost every movie, stay tuned for reviews.

A final note: $1 from each ticket will be donated to Gay & Lesbian Community Services (GLCS) for their important phone counseling work, so be a good Samaritan and go along to a few flicks.
