Court incident not a stabbing

Many thanks to Ja for sending in this account of what happened at The Court on the weekend. Throwing glasses = no no.

1. Guy and girls start bumping into each other on front of podium
2. Guy spills drink on injured girls friend.
3. Injured girls friend falls back and steps down from podium okay.
4. Injured girl shoves guy hard off the podium and he lands down hard on concrete.
5. Guy grabs bottle/glass and chucks it at injured girls face.
6. Blood rapidly seeps from her face.
7. Guy goes off towards inside area.
8. Security and girl chase him.
9. Girl starts punching him and security seperate them.
10. Girl goes to bathroom.

Ambulance took forever and a day as always to get there… probably an hour and a bit after the actual event took place.

Glass attack at The Court

First, my apologies for sparatic updates (life has been very busy recently), but I’ve been pulled back to the blog to talk about what happened at The Court last night.

The venue hasn’t been receiving any of my money in a while now, so I don’t have a first hand account to go on - if anyone else was there please shoot me an email. Apparently a girl was stabbed with a broken bottle at around midnight, and the scene was serious enough to pull in an army of police officers, firemen and security guards. Subsequently half of the venue was closed down to the public.

An SMS from a friend:

It was as Bree called it; a crime scene. I spoke to her she seemed really worried about the bad publicity and the loss of money!

… yeah who cares if the girl survives anyway. Luckily for Bree though, the attack at The Court has been completely overshadowed in today’s news by a different glass attack just down the road at the Elephant and Wheelbarrow, which happened the night before.

In fact, this other stabbing is getting so much of the attention the State government is considering a glass ban for problem venues. More good luck as The Court gets no mention in the news article. Is Bree’s relationship with the police working to her advantage or has word simply not filtered through to the media yet?

Either way, it’s another reminder that all pub venues experience violence issues and The Court is no exception. Lets end this post with a Facebook status update that appeared on my feed this morning. Stay safe on the weekends everyone.

Stabbing at the Court, venue closed by police at around midnight…now we know why I dont go there, on another note, awesome night at Connies. Yay! Bedtime now :-)

Witness comment via facebook:

some girls were fighting in the female toilets and one got hella bashed up. came staggering out at me bleeding all over the place. poor girl, her head was covered in blood, just dripping everywhere

Bree Maddox watch - Part 2749

breastUpdate: It seems PerthNow’s GirlBoyBlog are using Bree’s breasts as their promotional logo! Wow. —>

That gag reflex picture of Bree Maddox sparked a fair amount of conversation this week. Namely, this blog post on PerthNow.

Should there come a point in your life where you should cover your “assets” up and start dressing more conservatively?

At first glance the post doesn’t actually mention Bree Maddox, then BANG name drops in the last few paragraphs, along with… HOLY BEJESUS A HIGH RESOLUTION VERSION OF THE PHOTO. Like all blogs run by massive old-media corporations the post offers no real insight, but there are some entertaining comments from readers.

When asking for those comments PerthNow’s Girlblogger chimes in “please don’t be biased this is about what she wears only. Try not to be offensive I don’t think she’d appreciate it. Cheers”. Despite the warning, PerthNow dosen’t seem to have anyone moderating reader comments:

I wish she would just go away and stop trying so hard to be a society girl. The papers should stop feeding her ego and calling her a socialite, she’s no more a socialite than I am, its a stupid self inflating term that has no substance, just like Bree. She’s just a tacky try hard who basically does not have what it takes to be attractive at all. No matter what she wears or what angle the photo takes her in, she is downright plain ugly. Still, what do you expect from a former Penthouse Pet! Go away Bree now and stay out of the papers!!!

Harsh! Because I’m not a total asshole, here’s a photo of Bree looking quite nice actually.

Bree Maddox watch - Part 17

breenodressOn Sunday morning I wasn’t even out of bed yet and received a text from my best buddy and omnipotent media being David to let me know of a photo that was printed in STM Magazine. Many other people emailed in about it as well. Looks like Bree Maddox was out on the weekend at the Tarvydas King Street store launch, and… oh. my. god.

“Shit. The maid forgot to take my haute couture dress to the drycleaners. Oh, that’s alright, I’ll just wear this piece of cloth I found on the ground after Amateur Drag Night at The Court.”

… and pictured with the Mayor of Perth too! Great work. I actually needed a tie-in to legitimise posting that photo, and here it is: Police cars clog restricted gay bar zones.

Perth City Council concedes its parking inspectors have no power to ticket police cars that clog no-standing and one-hour zones outside socialite Bree Maddox’s inner-city gay bar.

The article brings up a few points I agree with, particularly because I’ve personally seen police cars scream dangerously past the alfresco area outside The Court. Not to mention police motorcycles I have also seen mount the curb and then drive along the footpath. There only needs to be one tipsy person who takes a mistimed step and it could all go wrong.

Bree doesn’t comment in the article on account of The Court’s good relationship with the police, and I can appreciate why she didn’t. With police cars all around it gives The Court a sense of security. Although, I could be totally wrong and Bree was actually doing a bit of persuasion work at the Tarvydas store launch:

Bree Maddox: Oi, Lisa… get those police cars away from my bar or you’ll be sorry. There could be an unfortunate accidental gust of wind and my top will fly right off! It’s only secured by a rubber band and some scotch tape you know!

Lisa Scaffidi: Please, don’t do it Bree, I don’t want to see that! There’s nothing I can do… it’s out of the jurisdiction of our parking inspectors… pleeeease spare me!

Photographer: Ladies can I take your photo for STM magazine?

Bree Maddox: SMILE AND DON’T SAY A WORD LISA!

Of course that’s all a joke and never happened, or maybe…

News from the gutter

Incase you didn’t hear, I died. That’s why there were no updates for a week. But hey I have some juicy goss to mark my return.

court1

If you were at The Court Wednesday night you would have witnessed a huge public discretion between a certain resident drag queen and a member of the audience. The conflict came from one side, and it didn’t involve your everyday drag banter; it was a full on verbal tirade with no regard for slander or libel laws or microphone volume. The amateur drag audience was all watching.

There’s a backstory to this incident and we can all learn a lesson from it: never become friends with benefits with a dried up drag queen, because later when you don’t feel like having sex with her anymore, she’ll try to blackmail you with those raunchy webcam videos you took. Then, if you try to blackmail her back, she’ll try to make a fool of you on stage at The Court (and fail). Man, I never would have expected such things in innocent ‘lil Perth.

Bree Maddox wears bra, pigs fly

breebraCan’t believe I almost missed this news story from a few days ago. Court owner Bree Maddox has used her (media) pulling power to drum up attention for the Breast Cancer Foundation of WA and their Purple Bra Day. Plus she felt like a photoshoot and some free publicity for The Court.

“It’s something that we all need to be aware of, now that cancer is being diagnosed in younger and younger women,” Ms Maddox said.

It’s great that Bree Maddox is doing something for the gay community like that. So Bree, when is the next fundraiser for Pride WA? …. never? Blind bitchy jabs aside, it’s a good cause, so if you want to see The Court decked out in purple lingerie head along this Friday night. Of course if there are any ads put up for Adultshop Bree’s philanthropy is instantly disqualified.

Lets look at some quotes from the article:

Owner Bree Maddox and staff will be donning purple bras to encourage women to get their hands on their breasts.

Ummmm… don’t think you’ll be having any trouble with women at The Court putting their hands on each other’s breasts.

“It’s also a good opportunity for guys to wear a bra as a bit of fun and not get frowned upon.”

Ummmm… don’t think anyone will be frowning at guys at the court wearing bras either. Well, maybe if some annoying straight girls bring their bogan boyfriends along.

Get yourself a job and a life!

The moment we were all waiting for. How ironic the person who asked the question is part of The Court’s customer base! I kind of get the feeling she knew that, though. I LOVE Bree’s dramatic emphasis on the word ‘life’.

Daylight savings debate continues

bree2Court owner Bree Maddox is in today’s West Australian, again, to express her views on daylight savings. It’s safe to say she’s the new centrefold model for the ‘no’ vote.

Along with a humongous action shot of her pouring a beer (except no beer is actually coming out of the tap), Bree repeats what she said in the last daylight savings article, minus the outbursts telling people to get a life. There are, however, a few additional comments which seem to address the issues I raised in my last post:

Bree’s argument is no longer that “people go out to clubs later”, it is now that “most people don’t want to eat their dinner until it’s dark”. I previously commented that daylight savings would actually help increase The Court’s alfresco dining crowd. Perth is a west coast city - sunsets are a defining feature of living on a western coast and daylight savings will help change the way people see late afternoon and evening dining.

Bree also previously said she doesn’t feel safe walking in the mornings if it’s dark, to which I highlighted she has a membership to the Next Generation gym across the road from her apartment. The new article states:

From a personal point of view, [Bree] said daylight saving meant she could not walk her dog in the morning because it was too dark and unsafe

The new addition is the mention of her dog. I do need to point out Bree that I’ve seen you take your dog out to The Court a couple of times after dark. It may be tucked away in a purse like Paris Hilton, but you’re still taking the dog out while it’s dark. Just sayin’.

Bree’s partner Malcom Day does feel differently about daylight savings:

If I didn’t own [The Court], I’d probably vote Yes but because our first priority is business, I’ll be voting No, unfortunately,” he said.

However, Mr Day said daylight saving would be beneficial for his other business, Adultshop.com.

I’m not going to imply anything here, but I totally invite you to read between the lines of those two quotes.

As I said previously, I encourage everyone who wants to add hours to their summer social lives, have more time to do things outdoors and bring Perth alongside the rest of the world to put in the effort to vote, and vote YES on daylight savings THIS SATURDAY!!!

Daylight savings means The Court makes less $$$, apparently

Last night the Perth Town Hall hosted a debate on daylight savings in Western Australia. Television cameras were there, and so was Court owner Bree Maddox.

daylight

I don’t know if this debate was supposed to include an accurate cross section of the community, but from what I’ve read it was mostly ranty business owners. From today’s West Australian (page 7):

Former Centrefold model turned businesswoman Bree Maddox said daylight saving was bad for businesses, particularly hospitality, because they lost an hour of trade. “People do not go out to the clubs until it is dark,” she said. “I exercise in the mornings and it is not safe for me to walk around in the dark.”

When a young audience member said all young people would move to the Eastern States if daylight saving was not introduced, Ms Maddox said: “I suggest you get a job and get a life”.

An intelligent, civil, and thought provoking comment from Bree, sure to win over even the most keen daylight savings supporters. Reminds me of this one time I posted an article about The Court management’s attitudes toward its patrons.

All bitching aside, things don’t pick up at The Court until 10pm whether or not it’s daylight savings. By 10pm the sun has gone down in summer anyway. I’m also confused because The Court is trying to pick up the alfresco evening pub dining crowd - wouldn’t daylight savings help you get more customers in to eat?… who would then stay on to get drunk?

Finally, the commment about having to walk in the morning I don’t buy for a second. Bree I know you go to Next Generation gym in Kings Park, you live across the road from it!

The debate can be seen on Today Tonight next monday night.

I encourage everyone who wants to add hours to their summer social lives, have more time to do things outdoors and bring Perth alongside the rest of the world to put in the effort to vote, and vote YES on daylight savings on Saturday 16th May.

Why bar owners don’t work in public relations

I don’t actually spend every moment of my life whinging about The Court. I only do it every second day, or when I’m feeling cranky, or feeling bored. Physically it’s a great venue, and yes it has introduced some good new elements to Perth’s gay bar scene (mainly food related). Although I feel it still hasn’t reached full potential yet you could definitely go a lot worse on a Saturday night - Mustang Bar anyone?

courtgoogle

What I frequently don’t agree with though is the venue management’s attitude towards its patrons. I’ve discussed this previously, but apparently we’re not even allowed to talk about it anymore: Bree Maddox (owner of The Court) recently went on a censorship spree and threatened the owners of two Court related Facebook groups, pushing the owners to take the groups down.

One of these groups was set up to discuss the security company employed by The Court, and included valid conversation on how patrons had been treated (according to the group a few incidents have occurred recently). When this Facebook group first started Bree Maddox even contributed, stating she would to look into the situation and enact changes as required. A few weeks later though she’s suddenly changed her mind and is demanding the group be deleted otherwise “further action” will be taken… huh?

The group owner told me:

She [Bree Maddox] asked me to take it down or it would be reported and removed anyway. So after a fairly intense discussion with her I swallowed my pride and removed it myself. They weren’t so much legal threats, but it was implied that further action would be taken if the group wasn’t deleted.

It doesn’t take a degree in Public Relations (which I do have, by the way) to know that if your customers are raising legitimate complaints, you don’t try to censor them. If you attempt to silence people they talk anyway. Word spreads and then some loudmouth puts it on his blog and then even more people know. Scaring your customers with implied threats of legal action or a banning from your venue is a big no no. A discussion group sharing complaints about a product or service is not defamation.

So my question to Bree Maddox is; why are we not allowed to talk about ways to improve The Court? Why are you threatening people who point out areas that need attention to make the venue better?

As a side note, can you also explain why you registered the domain name perthmardigras.com? I’m a tad confused… you didn’t want anything to do with the 2008 Pride Parade, but at the same time you registered a website for your own Perth Mardi Gras?… Just sayin!

Obviously this is quite a controversial topic for little ol’ Perth, and I would like to add a disclaimer that this post is by no means an attack on staff who work at The Court (I know you guys are a pretty tight knit bunch), or any specific security guard. Bree if you would like to respond - please do. I will gladly post your reply here.

Currently the Court related Facebook group I started ages ago has not received any requests to close down. Funny that.

A public holiday to remember who?

My lack of updates has been due to laziness and sickness (possibly the swine flu). ANZAC weekend is over and it’s a good time to think back at how we didn’t honour any fallen soldiers. If you went to a dawn service ignore this paragraph. For the 99% rest of you, and myself, ANZAC weekend means an extra day off work and events at the gay joints around Perth. It’s not that we’re disrespectful, we just have no connection to anyone lost in war. After all, it’s not our fault we’re generation Y, so lets make the most of it and get drunk eh?

gayprom

Ironically one of the ANZAC weekend events I did attend… sort of… was ‘Gay Prom Fairytale‘ (as named on the flyer). Ironic because it’s the one event I didn’t give any attention on this blog (it didn’t need it) and I ’sort of’ attended because I didn’t actually enter the prom area. Instead my associate and I drank wine on the reject side of the fence and listened to the same music entertainment for free.

Part of my reasoning was I didn’t particularly feel like paying a cover charge for ‘same shit different outfit‘. To combine a few comments from friends the gay prom night was full of gay boys dressing like they were desperate to star in a Twilight movie, and hag girls wearing ball dresses who really shouldn’t be wearing ball dresses… on account of the fat roll spillage. Plus I don’t like cover bands. I’m a bitch. To The Court’s credit it was a really great theme idea, but charging $10-$20 entry is starting to push it. Think of the ANZAC soldiers!!!

Hightlights from Gay Prom: Not paying any money, and a really drunk friend telling Bree Maddox “you can’t go back there it’s for staff only!”.

Still on the topic of events, Soho nights at Ellington Jazz Club is on TONIGHT! (Tuesday). This event format sounds very interesting and I will be in attendance, so if you were offended by my comments above at least come along to abuse me (keeping in mind I won’t care :-D). The night isn’t just jazz music… come!
